Hluhluwe is the oldest game park in South Africa.  It joined with another game park, called Umfolozi  many years ago, hence the hyphened name.   Hluhluwe is noted for successfully saving the black Rhino from total extinction.  From just a few black rhino, the park authority successfully bred over 2000 black rhinos and distributed them across southern Africa.

The black rhino got its name most likely, simply to differentiate it from the white rhino.  The white rhino got its name because the word "white" is similar to the Afrikaner pronunciation of the word "wide."  The white rhino has a wide lip whereas the black rhino has a pointed lip.  The white rhino is more easygoing but larger than the black rhino.  The black rhino is more likely to charge when provoked, but is also very wary of people.  So it was that on this occasion, we did not see any black rhino but did see several white rhino...

... and giraffes.  Here Bessy and Sandy step out of the car, risking life and limb to get a picture taken with a curious giraffe.  The giraffe was curious about us and we were curious about a giraffe that walked around with birds on it head.   Did the birds think that the giraffe was a tree?
