Journal of This Southern Africa Adventure
November, 2000
This month we went to the Madikwe Game Reserve.

This is about the third or fourth largest in South Africa. It is a great place because it is malaria free, does not allow day visitors (which reduces the crowds) has lots of animals, and has a wide variety of terrain including plains (for grazing antelope), mountains (for shy leopards), and a river valley (for hippos) and crocodiles. More about Madikwe can be found on the Madikwe page.

Madikwe is in a malaria free area. However, a week after returning, I began to feel the same symptoms that I felt when I had malaria (see the May 2000 journal), except to a much lesser degree. A blood test detected a small trace of malaria but it could not be determined if it was the same type that I previously had. Apparently, the type of malaria that I had six months ago does not usually reoccur as do many other types of malaria.
Due to the small amount of malaria found in my blood I did not have to be admitted to the hospital. A prescription of quinine and antibiotics cured me quickly and I was able to go back to work almost immediately.
Africa is in my blood, literally!
