Journal of This Southern Africa Adventure
January, 2001
Not much happening in January. Spend a couple weeks back home in NY and NJ. We arrived just in time for a 14 inch snow storm. We went downhill skiing at Gore Mtn in the Adirondack Mountains. The temperature at the top was -45 degrees Fahrenheit which is also -43 degrees Celsius.
No this is not Africa but our home in the New Jersey, USA.

Why am I mentioning all of this cold and snow? Well, when we got back to South Africa, we learned that it had just snowed in the Drakensberg Mountains. These are 9000 ft mountains that surround the small nation of Lesotho. What was so surprising was that it is summer in January in South Africa and Jo'berg (a mile high city) had just gotten its first heat wave of the summer. Snow, anywhere in South Africa, is a rare event but to get four inches of snow in the beginning of the summer is quite unusual.
We also visited the Drakensberg area of Mpumalanga. We have been here before but still had not seen all of the sights. We visited several waterfalls in the area, Bourkes Luck Potholes, Graskop, and Dullstrom. We stayed in a quaint lodge in Sabie and did a bit too much shopping there. Bessy finally got her zebra skin!
We plan to visit the 9000 ft. Drakensberg Mountains in Natal, for the second time, next month.
